My predictions for Tuesday’s elections were a bit off to put it mildly. But I wouldn’t say the results of this election were unexpected. I just didn’t expect them to happen in this election.
Yet, this was going to happen sooner or later. It’s why I never joined with the popular #nevertrump movement of voting Democrat. The idea sold by many including honorable people such as David French and Liz Cheney was that this election wasn’t about policy but rather about saving democracy. The problem was that others, such as the entire staff of The Bulwark, pushed the same idea in 2020. Really, they argue for a seemingly unlimited number of “saving democracy” elections where voters put aside their own concerns and issues to elect a party they disagree on with everything else in the name of saving democracy.
This sort of movement is not workable long-term. A healthy democracy is more than having a government that’s responsive to the concerns of its citizens, but it’s not less than that either. Those who argue voters should be unconcerned by kitchen table issues are, in effect saying, “Let them eat Democracy!”
And on Tuesday, voters showed they’d reached the limits of their tolerance for unresponsive democracy. And that plays into the biggest reason that Trump won.
The political and cultural left have seized control of the institutions of a free society to acquire the power to remake society through coercion without winning a single vote. No law can require free adult citizens to submit to hours upon hours of left-wing cultural re-education. But progressives in Human Resources departments across America’s largest corporations have forced fed propaganda on millions of unwilling employees in the guise of diversity training.
This could also be seen in COVID where public health bureaucracies ruined businesses with unscientific outdoor dining bans and set kids back with learning losses from scientifically unindicated school closures all because they knew best. While some of the criticism of the COVID-era is over-the-top and conspiratorial, there were many case of misconduct including cases where bureaucrats deceived the public about things like mask “for their own good” like Americans were children.
You could go on and on with issues where through ideologically driven actions of bureaucratic actors and people in positions of cultural power, the American people have been beaten down by unelected bureaucrats and activists in positions of cultural power have tried to remake Americans in their own image. But there are two issues that did more to bring about the result we saw today.
The Radicalizing Power of the Transgender Movement
If you’re under the age of twenty, you won’t believe it but there was a time when the idea that there were only two genders wasn’t considered a hate crime. This period is known as the history of Western Civilization until 2014. It was just 10 1/2 years ago that Laverne Cox became the first transgender person to appear on Time Magazine’s front cover for it’s “Transgender Moment” issue. It would be a watershed and bring to mainstream an effort to redefine the very concept of gender.
The next year, it would be revealed that Olympic legend Bruce Jenner had transitioned and become Caitlyn Jenner.
The agenda accelerated from there. Facebook tried to introduce 57 different genders and the race was to redefine gender was off at a record pace. We were introduced to the concept of being non-Binary, using preferred pronouns, kids taking hormone blockers, and low-level male athletes becoming champions in their field when they changed gender. It wasn’t voted on, there was no national discussion on how we should approach issues of gender identity, and gender confusion. It was just decreed by the cultural powers that be that thought they knew best.
If you dissented, you would be labeled a transphobe, a bigot, or a TERF in short order.
School districts allowed students to socially transition and hid it from their parents. Teachers told kids on social media that if their parents objected to what they were doing. Parents who saw these videos wondered who these teachers thought they were.
They thought they were gods. Like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, they didn’t think they were THE God, but they were gods. A god who could redirect and reform impressionable pre-adolescent and adolescent humanity. Like the biblical story of Genesis, where God created man in His image, they thought they could recreate their charges in their own image and tell kids who they were. And there was a massive backlash to this.
Why did so many people who were never on the right become radicalized into the far right? A big part of that answer is that the progressive left tried to redefine a major aspect of human existence and the human experience by cultural fiat.
To Vice-President Harris’ credit, she didn’t make this part of her campaign as she avoided talking about anything specific. But the damage was done.
Saving Democracy By Undermining It
The American people were not happy with either party’s candidate, and a strong majority wanted another option. The group, No Labels, led an effort to recruit a bipartisan unity ticket that would appear on the ballot in all 50 states.
This was vigorously opposed by Democrats as well as the Never Trump group The Lincoln Project. Democrats fumed that No Labels delegates picking a nominee without holding a primary of any sort lacked democratic legitimacy (before a few months later choosing Vice-President Harris as their nominee without a primary.) However, despite these warnings and efforts to discourage them, the vast majority of No Labels delegates opted to go on with their search when it became clear that America would be given a Trump-Biden rematch.
However, No Labels couldn’t run a campaign without a candidate and they could find no one to run on their unity ticket thanks to the interference of these outside groups. Some merely used arguments and emotional blackmail to scare candidates off, threatening them with forever being blamed for re-electing Trump. Some reports indicate far darker leverage was used with threats of rummaging through skeletons in their closet or even digging up dirt on their families.
Through intimidation and thuggish threats, Never Trump and Democratic activists foiled any attempt to give the American people a good choice on the Ballots. Rather they decided to saddle Americans with a choice between two evils and bet everything on them choosing the evil they liked more. Because at the end of the day, they were the experts, they knew best.
Of course, they also did their work to stop voters from having access to other choices that might draw away from Biden, including noted black college professor and intellectual Cornel West, whose Independent candidacy they tried endlessly to suppress. Democrats spent millions of dollars trying to suppress the third-party candidacy of a prominent black man in the name of protecting democracy and stopping racism.
I never came close to voting for either of the two candidates, but I had moments where I considered both. The thought that tempted me most toward Trump was a simple sentence that’s absolutely true: 'They don’t listen.'And that one sentence explains why Kamala Harris and the Democrats lost and deserved to lose.
Dark Years Ahead
Of course, this doesn’t make Trump a good choice. I feel every objection I had to Trump over the past nine years as strongly as ever.
The situation in America is not unlike a young woman from a bygone era who has an overbearing controlling family that tries to run her life and will never let her go forward. The family keeps her away from even positive people and friends. In desperation, one day she meets and and runs away and elopes with the head of a local violent motorcycle gang because her current situation is insufferable.
You might want to wish her well but you can just tell that within a week or so she’s going to be in for a beating at the hands of her “rescuer.”
Even the most mainstream ideas of the Trump administration are likely to lead to serious problems.
I fear for the noble people of Ukraine who Trump abandoned to Putin’s wolves. This will be a blot on our national honor. It’ll also invite more aggression from Putin and a wider war in Eastern Europe, potentially involving the United States. Ironically the Party that fear-mongered the most about World War III may end up causing it because they ignored the lessons from World War II: that appeasement leads to more aggression.
Trump’s tariffs as threatened will impose a higher cost of goods that will be passed on to American consumers which will lead to even more inflation. In addition, putting up trade barriers and tariffs on nearby nations will wreck their economies, leading to increased poverty, economic devastation, instability, crimes and wars in our neighboring nations as surges of starving desperate people that even aggressive border security may not be able to hold back.
In addition, while the arrogance of the public health sector has caused problems. The quackery posed by Trump transition chairman Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will make things even worse. If he succeeds in getting vaccines pulled off the market, we could see a return of childhood diseases that killed millions in past generations. As a parent of a toddler, this really alarms me.
But there’s nothing I can do but pray and hope that the worst intentions of the new Administration will be in some way mitigated as they usually are.
If things get as bad I fear, Americans won’t put up with it for long. Republicans should remember that the mid-terms are only two years away.
For a long-term solution to our problems, we need better politics and a better class of leaders in every sector who realize that knowledge is power, but not power to dominate, rather the power to serve and inform people to make the best decisions they can for themselves. The reactions I see on social media are not heartening.
Most prominent left-wing and Never Trump political thought leaders are waving their fingers in the faces of a recalcitrant American people rather than taking a look in the mirror. As long as that remains the case, nothing will change.
